My 6 month old rottweiler has been doing tracks since 9 weeks old.
He has very high food drive and is doing very well, food in every step. I have been training the articles away from track using clicker, dog sniffs article downs ,article between legs. I decided to put a article on the track he just went straight over the top and kept on his way. Dose he just need more foundation work with the articles away from track
Do any trainers use articles in a scent pad.
Suggestion appreciated.

When I first add articles to a track I move way up next to the dog so that they can not miss it and will help guide them if it looks like they are going to blow the article. As soon as they indicate I reward.
I don't add articles to a track until they are very reliable on indicating off track. It normally doesn't take long at all for them to put 2 and 2 together.
I've had good results and seen good results with adding articles straight to the track. Every 4 to 5 paces I add an article so that there are 10+ articles on the track. I walk close behind the dog and tell the dog search. When its nose gets to the article, I say platz. Then load the article with treats. By the 6th or 7th article the dog is downing on its own in anticipation of the jackpot.
