Having trouble with my 6 month old rotty pupp over shooting corners. I am still using food in every step,do you think I am making the corners to sharp.
This dog has very strong food drive. I also had issues with him pulling like a steam train but almost have that under control.
If it were me I would be doing serpentines with maybe one or two "3 step" corners every other track (if the dog is already doing 100 step straight tracks with food in every step, with intensity).
Use 2 lines based on your drive description. With 2 lines you can control the dog better, it's like a power steering and helps keep dog within half body length of the track on the corners.
Could be the pup just isn't ready for corners.
Ditto with Faisal on the serpentines. You can do circles also.
Your comment about "almost got that under control".
How? Corrections?
The serpentines and circles will go a long way towards slowing the dog down.
Corrections this early (6 months) may be to much for the pup and it isn't concentrating on tthe track as it should.
I would not allow him to pull me i would use a prong w/ lead under the right leg. if you are using a harness give it yo someone you don't like.(lol) B. Mannel German SV Judge explained to me. bait before and after the turn, not on the turn ( 97 points Sch 3 91 North American Championships i guess it worked but that was 20 years ago) good luck
Bob I got the pulling under control by changing from hotdog to kibble and also using prong collar.{I don't correct by popping on the lead ,most of the time the prong slows him down.} Thanks for advice.
I may double lay or triple the turn, but never food on the turn. the turn causes stress/dog is not sure, then he makes the turn there is a reward.then he becomes sure again.i am right next to him or no more than six feet all through training, that way i can correct him for getting off track or trying to circle i do test the dog at different leash lengths. also i never let any one lay a track for me. i lay them myself. after the dog advances i use a article after the turn. to let him relax and i give him a treat on the article. it's not the only way to train turns. it's worked well for me good luck .
