For a formal front finish:If you are using food...spit the food from your mouth down at the dog. He will have to come up close to you with his head up to catch it & it will put him in the perfect position. If using a ball or toy put it under your chin & drop it to the dog. When first teaching this to pups, I have them actually come up close so that they are touchingt me to be rewarded & hold the food in both my hands in the middle right in front of me
For a heel position finish....again you can spit the food to the dog next to your shoulder, which will get him with his head up & in the heel position next to you or put the toy in your arm pit & drop it. Be careful if you have a very fast dog....you may get bit if you are not faster then he is for the drop.
If you toss the toy or food behind or away in front of or on the other side of your body...the dog will be anticipating that & be moving in those directions all of which will be away from the position that you are asking for.
ty for the link!
just switched from useing his toys to treats again, then switched from cookies to meat am WAM BAM THANK YOU MAME we got shaping started and here is our first session with meat. I have also started spitting grapes to him to helpt with the focus and he's working on his cordination with that lol. but this is what we've got so far. so i'll try the spitting more and more as we both progress with our aim
oh he's a bit tired in this video..the 106 deg weather takes a lot out of him and me.
I know it's hard in a living room, but while you're working on him getting the position exact, every time, I always tried (and still try) to only ask for a front when I'm in a straight line... make it easy to do the right thing, and hard to do wrong.
Do you have a treat pouch? You might think about one, so your hands are not full of food, which is still luring him.
