I need some insight. My dog Cody is very reactive. WHen he hears something outside, or someone comes over, or when he hears the dogs next door barking, (which they do all day) he begins barking. I have taught him enough and he stops for a few minutes but starts up again. This is how it works, he barks, runs around the house barking, I say Enough, and he runs over to me and sits in front of me. I say good enough and give him a treat. Well, he has decided to take this to a new height. He now runs and barks (when there is nothing to bark at) and then immediately stops and runs toward me. I think I have some how taught him that when he barks he gets me to say enough and that game ends with him coming to me and rewarding him. I have made a mistake somewhere but do not know exactly where. I reward him as soon as he is quiet But I think he has misread my gue, and I know it must be my fault. He is a smart dog, I am failing somewhere. Any suggestions? (cody is the little black terrier in the picture below. sharon

Edit reason: more info
right now something was outside, or cody thought it was outside, maybe a kitty.
Cody doesn't begin growling, he just sets off barking and running around. He just ran around the house and jumped up on the foot stool to look outside, knocked over my papers and ran in circles barking. Yikes!! I want to solve this problem.
I sent him to his mat, he went, along with the other dogs, and barked all the way there. He will stay there for awhile, I do not let him off until he calms down. Cody is very, very active! and very intense. I just don't like that running and barking thing, it gets all the other dogs worked up! then they all bark.

Sharon, is it possible this guys needs more exercise? My knuckle-headed 8 year old mixed, Sadie, can be far more reactive and a pain in the badonkadonk on the days she does not get enough exercise.
This evening it came to my mind that I have been pretty sick this last couple weeks, but have managed to "play" with him in the house. But he is lacking his regular exercise. But even before this we have had a problem. I am frustrated tonight, of course I am not feeling real well. But I would like to know if I am doing something wrong. He is a great little guy and very, very smart, but this is one area that needs work.
thanks for commenting and for your suggestion, you are right. sharon
