Hello everyone. I am new to the boards and am ordering the obedience DVD ASAP. I have started using a prong collar on my 7 month old pup. This is settling her down and she is really starting to listen. My problem is that when we are walking, she continually bumps into my leg. She is walking on a loose leash when she does this. I don't know if it is something I have inadvertently done (probably) or if this is just some quirk. How do I show her how to walk without bumping me?
Generally her tail is up and she is watching me. She does occasionally get distracted and receives a light correction. When off leash in the yard she will come up and deliberately bump me for attention, we are working on sit and wait for attention. When I give a correction I immediately give slack in the leash. I am really impressed in the difference in her already, just puzzled by the bumping while walking.
Two things I can think of are insecurity at different times, so she bumps you to kind of keep tabs on where she is and still be able to look around and avoid that correction. And theres the bumping for attention like you said,to get you to get out a toy or something. It sounds like maybe she does a little of both.
Thanks Steve. We will continue as we are going and build her confidence. I am going to increase her exercise also. It is so hot here in Texas that I will have to get out of the house by 6 a.m. to avoid 100 plus temps. Of course the high temps really promote the crate in the air conditioned house!
