So, in only about a year Ryuk's heart murmur has gone from stage 1 to 2....which I don't like.....
It was recommended he get an ultrasound to see what's going on. My vet doesn't do those (no machine). I was wondering if anyone could recommend a specialist in western massachusetts (or neighboring states on the western side) that they like. I will be shopping around and checking references but I value the opinion of the people here and was curious for some input. Obviously my knee jerk reaction was Tufts....but well, I'm SURE there are closer people as well
On a happier note he's otherwise perfectly fine and still cleared to continue training for schutzhund (possibly trying for BH in october!!!! and we've juuuust started protection and tracking...protection=yay, tracking=not so yay) and such, he also still REALLY likes his vet, greeted him all friendly even after the temperature check XD
You could call Tufts and ask who they'd recommend in your area. Or Cornell.
I bet there is a cardiologist somewhere close to you, at least within an hour.
Naming the murmur is a subjective thing. If he's a little thinner it could sound louder - even if his coat is thinner-or your guy bought a new stethescope.
Pays to check it out if there has been a change.
You haven't seen any cardiac signs, have you? Does he poop out more easily?
It it were me, I'd go to the best canine cardiologist with in a reasonable driving distance. PERIOD.
You have Tufts not that far away. Many of my friends in CT take their horses & dogs to Tufts if there is any serious concerns & special tests needed.
I'm not sure that I'd be concerned so much with personal experiences, as bedside manner, office staff, ect can count into some peoples opininons can contribute as to how good an experience with a doctor is or isn't. JMO, of course.
Contact Cornell also, as they may have a clinic near by. Cornell just opened an emergancy vet & specialty practice clinic 20 minutes away from me, a couple of months ago. Has some of the top cardiac, ortho, etc etc doctors there, from all over the country.
You need somebody smart with a modern machine. The test is not painful in the least. The dog needs to know how to lie down still on a table and not move a muscle "dead dog" or stand for exam rock solid still w/o moving, touched by strangers.
If I had a dog as good as Ryuk I'd probably take him to the vet school. You get more bang for your buck, multiple opinions for the same money.

Yup, I would go with Tufts myself, or at least a Tufts referral. JMO!
I've been in contact with tufts, working out timing for an appointment. My vet assures me that there's not super rush since he's behaving normally and healthy and has never acted otherwise.
I'm aiming for an appointment at tufts in the next few weeks or so. I'm really hoping it's nothing major since there's no way Ryuk's going to tolerate a life "taking it easy"
