My 5 month old Cane Corso has taken a recent liking to wood. She chews (and eats) wood all the time. Table legs, chairs, my workbenches at the shop, 2x4s - you name it. We've managed to curb her chewing of the furniture but I get busy at the shop (work) and don't always catch her chewing the 2x4s for a bit. I'm not concerned with the habit unless it's a health issue - if it's acceptable and keeps her occupied for a few moments, then fine but if she's courting a vet visit (or worse) then we'll make sure she cannot get her teeth into it.
She eats very well - BARF twice a day (1-1.5lbs 2x/day @ 55lbs) but the routine of our house has been severely shaken by the arrival of our first baby. Is this a boredom thing?
Andy, with furniture building being one of my hobbies, I don't alow my dogs to chew on wood scraps. I pulled a very large splinter of wood out of one of my terrier's gums some years ago. He didn't seem to give a darn about the splinter but couldn't close his mouth. Terriers! If ingested, the splinters wont disolve, and could cause serious problems. Some of the more exotic woods could even be toxic to dogs. I've used Ed's method of squirting Bitter Apple in the dogs mouth, three timesd a day for three days on numerous peoples dogs. It's worked wonders. They wont touch anything with even a small amount of Bitter Apple on it.
At 5 months, this is a teething problem but boredome could come itop play since you have a new baby. Get a large kong and put some peanut butter inside. That should keep the pup busy.
Thanks guys - will do with the bitter apple. Bitter worked wonders saving the leather rhino-shaped footstool (though not before it lost it's tail). Now instead of chewing it, she drapes herself across it and dozes.
Why is it that you can buy all the fancy chewy toys they make but they capture the dogs attention for about 5 minutes before they're tearing apart newspapers or chewing on table legs?
