I've noticed that Diek's legs are getting patterned reddish fur on them, and under his tail in a circle he is developing some light tan and red. He isn't outside enough to be bleaching out.
His coat has changed dramatically in texture over the last few weeks, softening and shedding out huge clumps of fur that felt like broom bristles. Every else is black still aside from the white hairs around his scars. He has huge scars
Is it normal for a dog to be shedding out in a different color this late into development? I know it is for horses (and some change seasonally their whole lives) But is it the same for dogs too?
How old is he again? It could also be unhealthy coat blowing out.
Koenig was 1 when I got him- at that time, he was neutered, and had a dramatic change in nutrition (was on Alpo...) He's TOTALLY changed colors since I got him. He's a very very dark brindle now, and never regained all the undercoat he blew out the fist summer I had him.
He's 15 months. He also had a very dramatic change in nutrition. (whatever they had on hand for scraps at first home, purina at the shelter, now raw here) It's just strange to see so much reddish tan that was previously black. His fur is not super thick but the coarse texture was unreal.
We did take him to the Vet as soon as the really course fur started coming out in huge clumps. Had his bloodwork and all done to double check his health after being in the shelter. Aside from the 15-20 lbs he needed to gain everything checked out well.
I'm hoping that it's the stable environment and good meals that are causing some late color changing. I just thought that it would have happened much earier than this.
