So, I have a bit of a puzzling case that hopefully someone will shed some light on. I thankful to live in NYC where my dog pees on concrete to see that my dog was/is peeing blood, b/c if I lived in the burbs with grass I'd probably have no idea.
I have a 7yr old JRT, and I noticed Friday when I would take her outside she would do her initial pee(almost totally emptying her bladder), and then she would "mark" where she would pee 5-8 drops of urine. The initial pee with the large amt was normal in color, but the 5-8 drop amount after the big pee was/is bright red in blood. Appearing like you just cut yr finger bright red blood. She would "mark" with the small amount of bloody urine 4-8 times. I walked her holding kleenex, and when I would wipe her private area after her small droplets of pee, red blood would appear on the kleenex as well.
I took her to the vet immediately and they took a urine sample(with a needle/syringe), and also took an xray to see if she had any kidney or bladder stones. Negative on the stones, and the vet said today the urine did come back positive for lots of red blood cells, some(but not an alarming number) of white. He is a bit puzzled by the amount of blood present, and said to wait until the culture is grown to see what kind of bacteria it is. Currently, she is on Clavamox, and he said that depending on what the culture yields, he might switch her antibiotics.
My question is, could this be anything else?? Should I ask for bloodwork also? Btw, she is acting totally normally. Behavior hasn't changed a bit. I'm just worried there is some abnormality in her kidneys or its a sign of something more ominous. Worried.
Is the dog spayed?
Is she vaccinated for lepto?
One always thinks of a tumor bleeding, but I wouldn't panic . It could just be cystitis, a bladder infection, and the clavamox could do the trick. That would be far and away the most common cause of what you are seeing.
Well, a little blood can look like a lot of blood. Perhaps it isn't as terrible as it appears.
Here's hoping for a quick response to antibiotics, and good for you for noticing and getting her in right away.
