The first thing I would suggest you do is spend some time around Malinois, and DS, and decide what type of dog you want. IE big, medium sized, little, handler hard, handler soft, extremly reactive, moderately reactive, etc. Once you have narrowed it down a little more as to the type of dog you like, people might be able to make some breeder recommendations. If you like the big, bruiser, type dogs, it won't do much good to recommend a breeder who is breeding smaller, twitchy dogs, or vice versa.
Excellent suggestion. I've got a few "appointments" lined up now to observe a few different clubs, and who knew, Ive got a Mal breeder about 2 miles from my house. (Not that I would buy one from there, just makes it really convienient to go observe!)
Could I get some insight into what people's opinion is on what body type makes a better ring sport type dog? (ie. Do I want the hard hitter, or the quick and agile? )
Also, what would make the best combination for a first time "high drive dog" handler that wants to compete? Or would that come down to personal preference as well?
I think one of the hardest things is going to be once I do figure out what I want exactly, trying to figure out which breeder breeds that type!
Personally, I'll go to the ends of the earth for what I think is the perfect dog for me, and for what I want to do.
After much deliberation , hemming and hawing, rocking back and forth in the corner ... err nvm.
It has been decided that a Dantero Malinois is in my future. I like the way Kadi does things, and the personality and temperament traits of her dogs. She is a little over the top about her dogs, but then that's not a bad thing.
