One of the rescues that I volunteer with has a strict clause in their contract that, if you become unable to care for the dog for any reason, and you do not have a designated family member/friend who will be responsible for your dog, the dog must be returned to them, where they will find a new suitable home.
This particular rescue also has a "Senior to Senior" philosophy they try to follow when they can, meaning they try to match senior folks wishing to have a dog to a mellow, congenial, easy-going senior dog. It's a win-win situation. Senior person has the comfort and companionship of a good dog; dog has a promise from the rescue to always have a good home.
I know of several instances where a dog has been returned to the rescue after outliving their human, and was then placed in another wonderful home. This particular rescue is very strict about their potential adopters, requiring a personal home visit/interview by one of their volunteers before approval. They also follow up with the adopters on an annual basis as long as the dog lives.
I'm sure there are many other rescue organizations out there that operate in a similar manner.
Just got of the phone with a man that will have a litter at the end of the month. both mom and dad are working drug dogs. I can do it if my daughter gives her ok. I say that because if something happens to me she would be the only one to take care of all three and a Malinois is be on what she could deal with and I would not want her to think she had to.
