Can anyone please give me some advice or perhaps reassurance.
I'm currently caring for 4 abandoned puppies. We found them dumped in a bush on Sept 2nd, probably on the day they were born or maybe 1 day later.
They are now 18 days old. I've been feeding them Ed's formula and they are all eating well, they all poo perfectly, I added extra water to formula as suggested.
Yesterday one of the pups, 2nd biggest - weight 820g started sneezing and now has a green discharge coming from it's nose.
It's still eating well and going to the toilet but it's suffering a bit with its breathing.
I'd be worried about canine distemper here, especially in "street dogs". The dam may have died. Is the puppy "sleepy", is it feeding OK? Are the eyes red? Is there green discharge in the eyes? I'd be investigating killed vaccine (ONLY KILLED) at 1/2 dose, and only this agent.
This could be a sinus/ localized infection from the pups nosing around in their feed. That would be my hope.
Speak to your local veterinarian, get a feeling for diseases in your area.
Their eyes are all perfect no redness or discharge at all thankfully. They are all feeding very well, then sleeping 4 hours between feeds. I'm wondering if it's something we're doing with the bottle feeding. I'm not sure if pups get colds? We are keeping them nice and warm.
1 of the pups is totally fine.
The other 3, one has been sneezing a bit but now the nose discharge is lighter in colour, closer to white, not so green now. The biggest one isn't sneezing but is a bit snotty too.
Today they seem to be improving, so I'll just keep monitoring them. Any bad signs and we'll take them straight to the vet (who already doesn't agree with Ed's formula and thinks we should use a pre packaged one) Personally, I wouldn't give baby formula to a baby.
I will get my boyfriend to call the vet to ask about KILLED vaccine. I'm not sure if it will be available in Crete but we can check.
