Are the Bronze, silver and Gold part of the CGC or something else? If not part of the CGC than are they a test that would be done before the CGC for new owners?
It is definitely not part of the AKC's Canine Good Citizen testing. For passing that, you just receive the CGC certificate and you can put those letters after your dog's name. There are no further designations such as bronze, silver, gold. I believe the same is true for the CKC, Canadian Kennel Club, but our Canadian members will correct me if I'm wrong.
It does appear to be a part of the UK's version of the CGC test:
Once you're on the page I've linked you to, there is a list of further links in the center column of the page. Click on "GCDS Award Descriptions," and you'll see they do indeed offer bronze, silver and gold levels.
Of course, there may be other organizations that offer those titles in their particular dog sport venue, but I'm really only familiar with the AKC's titles.
Sasha and I just got our CGN (Canadian version of the CGC) and because she is considered a mix-breed, we will be trying Rally-O next. I would like to do our CD, but from what I've seen so far, you have to have a breed that is recognized by the CKC/AKC.
As far as what to do after the CGC, it really depends on where your interests lie and whether you are interested in formal competition or not. In AKC, the next step would be competition at the beginner level in Rally, Obedience, Agility, Tracking, etc.
There are also various organizations that offer certifications in things such as Therapy Dog, Search and Rescue, etc. And of course, there are things like Schutzhund, ring sports, etc. This board is full of people who can provide more info on these venues.
There are lots of other sports and activities one can participate in with their dogs that may or may not involve formal competitions and earning titles. Herding, flyball, dock diving, carting and weight-pulling are a few that come to mind. There's even an organization I have heard of called Dog Scouts of America.
I hope others will chime in and fill in all the blanks I'm sure I left.
