Yes, I gathered that you were making that assumption when you said:

Actually, labs have very strong mouths....don't let the nice temperament fool you. Certain ways of handling them growing up will contribute to the "soft mouth" desired for hunting. I have read that years and years ago not only were they known for their hunting ability they were actually known for their fighting ability. No joke.
I've read that a few times when researching the history of the breed. I will try and dig up the references...I am positive that I have read this. The breed was described as being renowned for it's hunting, swimming and fighting abilities. As soon as I find the references I will get them to you.
