I have a 5-1/2 month GSD, that spends her days outside in a 10x20 kennel and her nights in the house inside a crate. Sometimes we have her in the house inside a Ex Pen. My question is will there ever be a time when I can trust her to be in the house? I feel bad having her outside in the kennel during the day. She has so much energy that bringing her in the house seems to be more punishment than reward.
I don't think you can expect a 5 1/2 month old GSD pup to behave in the house after being outside all day (presumably alone) even if she's in a expen.
What does she get for exercise?
You could start trying a bit of 'loose' time in the house, after she's had a good long bout of exercise (a nice walk and lots of ball/fetch/marker training, for example.) See how that goes, and make sure to leash her, or put her in the expen before she gets a chance to do something naughty.... don't want to let her have an opportunity to form bad habits! If you're going to try this, I highly suggest something yummy for her to chew on to occupy her. Stuffed kong, bully stick- something to keep her attention.
Many people are tethering pups to them at that age- tie the leash to your belt.
Sounds like your dog needs more mental stimulation and exercise.
When my most recent pup was 5.5 months old, he was crated at night and also for a few hours during the day when we were at work. The rest of the time was devoted to him (still is, come to think of it).
Some people tether, I personally hate having a dog tied to me...so I would use baby gates to keep the pup in the room with me. It was pretty much hands on all the time...if there was a moment when I couldn't interact with him (like say when I am cooking dinner), then I would give him something to occupy his time (bully stick, raw beef rib, etc.).
This is the shaping period of a relationship between you and your pup...make the most of it.

Hi Kendall,
What's your pups normal schedule look like as far as wakeup, food , exercise, kennel time, crate time, personal time, training time etc...?
Me too. Also what kind/how often on the ob training?
eta Outside all day means just about zero in the exercise/stimulation column. (Just want to make sure that lying or standing around waiting for something to happen isn't being counted as frolicking in the yard. )
