Hey guys I am looking to enroll my gsd in or should I say attend a new trainer that is here locally for Schutzhand. He is very well knwn and all the locals here know him for his great obedience classes and boarding facility. I just wonder might there be anything that I should look for, questions to ask and so on to make sure that I am getting the proper training and the bang for my buck so to speak.
I'd ask what type of training it is- positive, compulsion, a mix of both? What is used to reward the dog? (toy, food, praise) Ask for references, and CALL THEM!
Ask him how many dogs he has titled in SchH or any other sport etc that he is giving instructing for & to what level & ask him to document it with score books etc.
Watch him train & see how he handles different dogs. Does he do the exact sane thing with each dog or does he take into consideration that not all dogs learn or can be trained exactly alike.
Anne has EXCELLENT points. I somehow missed the SchH reference. Definitely ask about the dogs he's titled, ask to see a scorebook, or a video of him at trial with the dog/s. If he's the Training Director for a club, ask when they meet, go watch, and talk to everyone that is out there.
