Hi, i have seen dogs with backpacks on and wondered would it be a good idea to buy one for my dog, my thinking on this being that she tends to pull a bit on walks, i use a dominat dog collor because she could get aggresive while passing other dogs, that works well but she can sometimes pull a bit and i wondered does anyone know the benefits to fitting a backpack on her, would this slow her down a bit, wear her out more, we walk for an hour or so a day, but i feel she could do with a bit more wearing her out. Any advice would be great.
I use backpacks as they tend to give the dog a more intense workout as well as allowing them to help me run errands. The backpack as also been a godsend for my reactive dog, Hobbes, as it gives him something to focus on other than other dogs that we may encounter on the street. As he is a lab/shep mix, packing and carting tend to throw him right into working mode so it helps him focus on my instructions not the scenery. I am also starting to see this behavior bleed into other asepts of our life but I will be looking foreward to see what others will post.
If you do decide to use a backpack, go slow and easy on the weight and don't exeed 15 to 20% of your dog's body weight. A visst to the vet is also encouraged to make sure they are sound, no probelms with joints, back or structure etc. Also no heavy weight until 18 mnths to 2yrs old, but I'm sure you probably knew that. I use a soup can in each side for training wieght for a lab mix.
Thanks Dawna, that's what i was thinking you said it well, i want something to give her a more intense workout, sounds good, as my dog is also very reactive to her surroundings.
Yea i was thinking a small bottle of water in each, but thanks for the tip on the vet i hadn't thought of that.
