I am writing in defense of Tom Rose's school and training methods. First of all Mr. Banks to imply that yanking on a dogs neck until it yelps is the Tom Rose method and only method is false. As you and I both know the Tom rose school does not make you train with a pinch collar and will support you in whatever collar you wish to use and if its not working out will gladly advise and help with whatever you decide. Now to respond to "corgi power" for you to say,"thats how they do it at Tom Rose " is ridiculous and false. You said you trained there and used their methods and your dog shut down after a year,"two weeks before nationals" well while you were there you obviously missed something, like how to read a dog and make decisions for your training based on that.A dog shuts down from poor timing and no motivation and also to imply that AKC corners the market on utilizing the drive in a dog is just silly. Thats what schutzhund is all about working a dog in drive. So for those who jumped on the band wagon against Tom Rose training methods you were duped and mis informed. I have nothing but respect for Tom Rose and his methods and only hope to know and understand half of what he knows, someday.

yes, tom rose is a wealth of knowlege. and decades of training can't be wrong, can it?
decades of compulsion?
i am not against tom rose. i am against skipping the learning stage of training. and i am against putting pinch collars on 15 week old puppies. and tom rose, while he is good and he is knowlegable, he is not GOD.
and oh, yeah, they'll work with you if you don't want to use a pinch collar, you can use whatever you want.
somehow, they forget to explain that to their customers. they say this is what we do and here is your pinch collar and see you next week. and i saw people question this and try to go thru the obedience lessons without using a pinch collar and they were constantly told that they needed to teach the dog negatives. they were told that without negatives, the dog wouldn't learn. i know someone who stopped a destructive dog using nothing but positive motivation. when i first heard the problem, the dog was stealing and chewing everything around. i was thinking ecollar. she was thinking teach the dog to give her his "finds" in exchange for a treat. the dog no longer destroys anything and the dog never had to experience pain. that is not the TRS way of training. the TRS way of training is not the only way, and it is not always the best way. i would suggest you broaden your horizons or you'll be limited.
also, see my post today under "akc obedience competition".

The Tom Rose School is one of the top dog training schools in this country. I recommend it. I do not argue that there are as many different ways and opinnions on how to train dogs as there are dog trainers. But the fact remains that Tom offers his students a sound value for their money - that is more than I can say for most of the dog training schools in this country.
There are graduates of Tom's school all over this country and those I have met have been satified with their training. If someone wants to get a feel for the kind of information that is available from Tom I would recommend that you purchase one of the 5 training videos that I have done with Tom.
I am not going to tollerate people trashing Tom on this board. I cannot make it any more plane that that.
I knew it wouldnt take long for you to bite on that"corgi power". First of all I never compared Tom Rose to God. My main point was for you to imply your dog shut down a year later "two weeks before nationals" because of Tom Rose methods is ridiculous. Why are you correcting a dog to the point of shut down at that level of competiton, what Im saying is your dog shutting down is about you,not Tom Rose. Tom Rose teaches you how to read a dog and act accordingly, and as far as negatives go, thats all relative , what the dog perceives as a negative ,its different for every dog. As far as broadening my horizions, trust me theyre very broad, that comes with being able to read a dog and not keeping applying the same technique over and over until it shuts down "two weeks before. nationals" . Once again I think you should seperate the short comings of your corgi, and your training techniques from Tom Rose and take responsability.
