I am trying to find the time in my day to give my dogs more exercise. I have come to the realization that i really don't have much more to offer (at least until July when i am FINALLY finished with school). So...... I am very fortunate to have a good support system of people who have offered to help out. My brother and boyfriend have both offered to add in extra walks and fetch time.
I am (well am working on being)the dominant one for the dogs and they respond fairly well to me. Duke (our 1yo dog) doesn't behave as well when other people walk him.
Is having other people walk the dogs for me sometimes going to effect the work i have been putting in with duke (working on being the dominant one, and working on dukes aggression)?
Should i always be the one to exercise the dogs? or is it ok to have other people help out?
Ashley, fetch time with anyone is going to be extremely beneficial, IMO. There is a safe fetch place?
Walking is too, generally, but you don't explain where the other people are as far as desensitizing
goes. .... Actually, I'm not sure where you are with it.
It is absolutely ok, as long as the walkers are going to make the dogs follow the same rules as you, as long as they are willing to go on a few practice walks with you so you can show/coach them on proper procedures should a situation arise, and as long as you can say to yourself they would NEVER try to take things into their own hands, fudge even a little on the rules, and they respect you enough to follow the walk you have outlined...then yes it can be done.
Can they do all this? If so, "Yay"!
The other thing with the DA dog, is unless you are exercising him, I would require him to be muzzled. This will give the walker extra confidence and control, because you say the dog does not always respond to others. This is normal, and my dogs will only go with someone/listen to them if I give them a command to do so, my male won't yet(6 months) under any circumstances.
Any walkers should be familiar with any corrective collars and how to use them! If they are willing to walk, but are not too good at the desensitizing/training part of the walk, you COULD make sure they walk in low traffic areas(Are there any?). There is still a risk involved, but sometimes we can only do our best.
If none of the above it workable/possible, then I would make sure you are the only one to walk the DA dog. Maybe they could help out with the easier dog, so you can spend a bit more time with Duke?
