In the 8 weeks 8 months video, there was a section on teaching puppies how not to jump up the side of an ex pen. I see what Cindy was doing, but my pup sits pretty well while im next to the pen. when I step away to test him he tends to jump on the side. I say
"no" and wait for him to get off the side. Once he does I reward him.
is there a way to train him to not jump up while Im further from the pen? can I teach him to not jump on the sides at all?

I would train "off" vs just saying "no" so that eventually you are telling him something TO do vs something NOT to do, if that makes sense. Once he understands it up close, you will start giving the command from farther and farther away, marking and rewarding each time.
You might also try giving him a long lasting treat when you are leaving him in the xpen and leaving the room (kong filled treat?) so that he has something which will occupy his mind and efforts instead of focusing on wanting to be with you.
I have an everlasting treat ball.. which he hardly even pays attention to. I also give bully sticks. Those he tends to like a little better... usually I scatter bits of a lamb treat in the pen prior to leaving him to get his attention away from me while I exit his sight...

he doesnt jump up until Im about 5 feet away. at this point do I walk back to him when he "off"s the pen? Or do I praise him and toss a treat?
I guess my biggest dilemma is getting him to "off". I stand at about 5 feet, he jumps up on the pen. I tell him "off" once or twice. when he gets off, I go up to him to reward him... does this sound right?
