I had seen a discussion on this and I'm confused  The person I got my GSD from told me it was a bad ideal to train my dog in Schutzhund and Search and Rescue. I thought if trained right it could happen, but he refused to train her in SchH if I was going to make her a SAR dog because of the liabilitys. Also He said that if a lost victim came up to me too quick, my dog if trained both ways would take it as a aggression and bite the victim. So can anyone help me?
It totally depends on the dog. Alot of SAR groups will not let a Sch. trained dog in . But if the dog has solid nerve and has GOOD training, there is no reason he couldn't DO both. I would pick one disipline and train.. and when your dog is trained and experienced in the one..(this will take years) then you could (if you still wanted to! ) do the other. Both Schutzhund and SAR work take an extreme amount of time, patience and money. If you are a novice trainer.. you need to concentrate on one or the other.
Thanks for the reply Jody,
My biggest problem is My trainer would like to see
Bianca (my dog) do Schutzhund to keep it in the german blood line. But the Fire Department I'm in is willing to support me with SAR and is needing to know how much money I need so they can fit it in our buget this year. If I go SAR with her, will this hurt the blood line and her pups from ever doing Schutzhund work?
Actually if the SchH training is GOOD it would be a poor idea to do both SAR and SchH. Good meaning the training is done in a way that the dog will perform seriously on and off the Schutzhund field.
I wouldn't think that is the best idea for an SAR dog.
So VanCamp your saying I should go Schutzhund if
the training is good? Or SAR if the training is good? I'm confused with your answer. What about
he blood line and her pups will it hurt them?

If you are a novice handler - at either sport or SAR, breeding should be your last priority. You have a young unproven dog - how do you know she is suitable for breeding? Your posts indicate you plan on breeding this female but she is even started apparently in training in either discipline. Not every female needs to be nor should be bred.
If you are going to do schutzhund, you need a good solid foundation in tracking - that style of tracking is different than the SAR style...and you will frustrate and confuse both yourself and the dog by trying to do both at once. Logically, as well as reportedly, it is easier to go FROM schutzhund tracking TO SAR style than the reverse.

I think Jody answered your question quite well. I was faced with the same dilemma recently—choosing between SAR and SchH. I was originally told by some members of the SAR group I approached that my dog would not be excepted due to her SchH background. However, the leader of the group, a LEO, had no problems with that. But there was no way I could do both time- and money-wise. And because the SAR team was not funded, they wanted a commitment of at least $5,000.00 per year. So I decided to stay with SchH.
As far as hurting the bloodlines and the pups? I don’t see how it would. If your dog proves to be great at SAR and you decide to breed her, you may have an even better chance to place the pups--probably just as many if not more people are interested in SAR as in the sport. And if the bitch comes out of the bloodlines known for excelling in the sport, the fact that their momma is doing SAR work is no way gonna change their genetics.
Thanks for the imput everyone, I got a lot more knowlage today thanks to you guys and gals and my trainer. Her (my dogs)mom and dad are both SchH3 so that is why I should go SchH with her. As for training she 2-months into SchH training, she's up to 20 yards in tracking with a curve, She heels great (on leash). But I got a lot of work ahead. I guess the Fire Department will have to wait. Thanks all...
