Hello everyone!! I'm looking for a School or Trainer that's located in No. CAl. I know of Mike Ellis, but I can't efford the prices. Do anyone know of anyone else that might have a little more reasonable prices? I had a litter of AKC Rotties and I want to keep one for professional training. I even have a great female that I'm willing to trade for training. She has all the desired traits to be a good dog for this. The one I'm keeping is a male with the same traits. They're German blood and have excellent temperments. I know you get what you pay for but in todays market my belt is as tight as it can get. I live in Stockton, CA. and I want to have my dog trained really for my wife cause it's not safe here anymore. I don't want a gun and would like to have a dog that can be controlled and protective.
You get what you pay for - the world of "protection dog training" is by far the most dishonest area of dog training, the vast majority of trainers in that venue do not know what they're doing and most owners simply end up wasting a lot of money.
Beware.
Andrew Ramsey is great from what I've heard I have met him once once and hope to do a nose work seminar in 2012. I'm in norcal, I work with Amy Peterson and Marcel Harnois both are extremely gifted. DO alot of research and visit a few places. Not all methods work for everyone
Thanks everyone!! Steve, I made contact with Dave Deleissegues from http://www.vsk9.com/. The prices are reasonable and he uses the same technics that are use by Leerburg. I'll probably get started the first of the year. My pup will be 8 weeks this weekend so I'll get started with the basic obedinece from the videos I already have and get a good head start. Now one thing. He stated that he really don't train protection training in Rotts until they are at least a year old. When I mentioned about getting started with developing the prey drive he said yes that's what you want to do. Build up the prey drive and when the dog matures that's when you start the protection. Does this sound right?
Just over the phone like that Ronald, I would guess he's just giving you a general idea, not a definate time frame or age at all. They all mature differently and he'll know when and how to add things and what pace your dog is ready for when your with him, in person.
The first time I had my Rott out, he was 4 yrs old. My Shepherd has been out at the field since he 8wks.
