I am rather new to "working" with dogs besides conformation training. My short term goal is to accomplish a BH title within 12 months. There are so many videos available, where do I start? The dogs being trained are 14 months and 9 months.
Yes, marker train, not with clicker but yes command. Does this make sense? I also use treats as well as awards. As a beginner where do I start as far as DVDs? I do not want to use any compulsary methods at this time.
The BH is mostly basic obedience, except maybe the motion excercises. Learn the pattern, and make sure you get your dogs used to being around people and that they are at least neutral to other dogs.
I'd suggest practicing the heeling pattern *without* your dog until you have it down firm - the judge doesn't call out the directions ( they do in AKC OB for instance ) and it's easy to forget when you're under the strain of actual trial conditions.
I'd view both the DVG and SchH USA trial manuals, that'd be very helpful:
Whichever dvd's you want is fine Jowhar. Its heeling, sits, recall. Basic stuff. I'm sure The ME dvd's would be helpful.
I'm just focusing on your goal of a BH more then anything.Pay attention to the temperament portion too.
I can only remember one dog not passing because of the ob part. The dogs I've seen fail were in the temperament part, things like the chip scanner and behaving in a group of people on a loose leash. Keep those things in mind.
