I was wondering if there is anyone who trains their dog in schutzhund and akc/ankc (if in australia) obedience, tracking comps etc simultaneously? Just curious since I was thinking of doing this with a future dog. Does it confuse them, the different types of send-away in utility vs schutzhund etc? Or is it relatively simple and common for a dog to be trained in both types of comps? Thanks for any suggestions :-)
I trained multiple dogs to SchH II and UDT's in the past. However, in my search for what I consider to be a dog that will actually defend it's owner, I've really dropped back in the AKC competition ( I still instruct AKC obedience, though )
It can be done, but you need a dog with mid-level drives to succeed in both venues. High drive dogs just end up too much for the AKC obedience ring.
The send away never was a problem, although the AKC judges would occasionaly comment on my use of the command "Voraus".
Although you're allowed to use the dog's name as a prep command in AKC, you can't do that in SchH, and you're better off just training and showing in the SchH style of just using the command ( you'll forget about it during the SchH trial and get dinged for double commands otherwise )
I've done obedience but not tracking. My dog is a 3 year old GSD SchH3, UD, one leg UDX. He is very much a middle-drive dog though. He loves obedience and pleasing me, does pretty good in Schutzhund but doesn't quite have the power on the protection field to get to high levels. He's not quite precise enough yet to get high points in AKC obedience, but he is improving as he gets older, currently our high score is 194.5.
I think GSDs generally have a huge capacity for learning, Bode knows all the german and english commands. I used to use all english in AKC obedience until I got to CDX, but I now use a combination of both. His go-out command in UD is "Go", but I use the same pre-signal as I use in schutzhund. The big difference between an open grass schutzhund field, and a usually indoor, matted ring with gates makes it easy for a dog to do both IMO. Bode certainly never appears confused. I think I have more of a problem than he does!
Thanks for your advice guys, it makes sense that u would need a middle drive dog to succeed in both. I wasn't aware that you could use german commands in the AKC ring though, here in australia you are only allowed to use english which could pose a bit of a problem unless you trained schutzhund in english as well.
