anyone , do you have an idea of how Flinks uses the ball on a string for the down command?
it apears like my puppy is a crazy ball drive female , she will sit , heel and come for it.
however , the down command is not going so well , she will down for a peace of hot dog but while using the ball on a string she somehow dosent wanna do the down.
what is that i am missing here?
Lure her down with the ball, and when she's down reward her from that position. Then gradually keep the hand further from the ground. The next step is I give a sharp downward pop with the ball in conjunction with the command to get a fast down. Again phase the hand motion out. Finally I have the dog hold the down for gradually longer periods before reward, and progress from there. Don't know if this is how Bernhard does it, it's the method that's worked for me.
When I start with puppies or young dogs, I do alot of training with food, rather randomly in the house. They never get a free treat, and teaching things for a treat takes off all pressure, and since one typically only give a few little tidbits at a time it eliminates the possibility of too many repetitions. When the dog understands the command using the prey item helps add drive and quick response to the work.
If you must first lure her to the down with the ball don't try to be fast until she understands the procedure. Bring the ball down near the chest, not out in front of the dog. If the dog has good drive you'll find that before long as soon as she sees your hand move toward the floor she'll drop. Make sure at first that the reward is immediate, but only if the down is correct...elbows all the way to the ground.
Kinda hard to teach over the internet. Do you have a trainer you work with?
