Hello every one, I have a 11 month mal that does very well in searching. In fact he's too fast for me to keep up with & damm good at it.How ever I haven't came up with the method to get him to bark when he finds the person. I would like to teach him the bark after locating the found person.I don't wanna asume this is like a bark & hold. So I would rather some one with more knowledege teach & tell me.Thank you.
My SAR Aussie would bark excitedly every time I unlocked her kennel gate. It was a simple matter to give the "speak" command, then let her out with praise and reward when she responded. They catch on fast. It's just a matter of finding what triggers your dog. I started her on short run aways with me as the victim and she soon learned to speak as soon as she found me. That got her her reward then (kong). It was very simple to transfer this to other "victims"
YES I got a new toy.
He barked, but the light bulb hasn't went off yet. He's thinking the jumping got him succes even though he got the new toy when he finally barked. I will keep this up for a while.
The next step could be waiting ( be patient) until the dog stops jumping but continues barking, then the reinforcement. Consider including a release command as a marker of the barking behavior, and then the presentation of the reinfocer. The release command becomes a secondary reinfocer to the toy.
You could also crate/kennel the dog and tease it from outside with the toy. Reward barking with the praise/release/toy. "Frustration builds drive". The kennel worked great with my Aussie. Now to keep her from barking to get out, she has to sit quiet for a bit. It hasn't hurt her indicating at all, but teaching an Aussie to bark is like teaching a bird to fly. Just a matter of timing it in your favor.
