My toy poodle, Paige, has injured her stifle. Brief history, this dog will jump/climb anything. She was supervising me feeding the other dogs by jumping up on a wire crate. She does this all the time. This time, when she jumped off, she hung her leg in the wires and thrashed herself free. We bundled her up and went directly to the vet.
He found everything in place, just very sore. Hips lined up, no luxation of her patella. (Yeah!) He gave her a shot of Metacam and sent her home. I crated her as best I could (she is VERY active, even in her crate. (She's my mini mal) I stopped doing any training thinking she would rest. Wrong. Since she is now so bored, she has learned how to clear a four foot fence.
She started limping again, so, back to the vet for a recheck. He sedated her (she now hates him) and we did x-rays. Her hips are beautiful, her knees look ok, but once she was out and relaxed, he was able to get just a little luxation on that knee. So, he decided that she has a partial ligament tear. He sent home rimadyl (I used one dose that day, but not since). I have been crating her again and last night before going to work,I put her in a small play pen. She broke out of that and apparently spent the night harassing the big dogs.
She is using the leg, but still favors it a bit. Vet said since she is under 10 pounds(7.6), she'll heal on her own.
Two questions: Does that make sense or should I take her somewhere else? and
Can I please at least take her tracking on level ground to try to keep her busy? She's driving everyone nuts because she's not allowed to run and play and I've stopped training for OB and agility for now.
Ok, make it 3 questions: Would wrapping it hurt or help?
Thanks for reading my little novel. Paige and I appreciate it.
Lisa sorry to hear about the injury that had to hurt and hope for a speedy recovery. I would put some no backing carpet or rubber or foam Matt on top of the crate and secure it so it can't happen again.
I'm no Vet so others will probably have a better idea but you would think tracking should be OK you'll be able to control her from running off and jumping over fences and reinjuring.
