Anyone using the fursaver collar? My dog currently wears the leerburg nylon slip collar. I believe I read that Mr. Frawley said he would never sell a metal choke chain, but the fursaver collar seems like the same thing. I am just wondering if anyone uses one, and what you feel the benefits/drawbacks are? I am curious about how it works for corrections? Thanks!
A fursaver collar is NOT a correction collar. Leerburg dogs wear them as every day collars for tags and such. They are easy to remove and clean, and they don't leave the "dent" in the coat that other collars do. Because the collar tightens, dogs that are not supervised should not wear a fursaver- there is too much risk that the live ring will get caught on something.
Choke chains can easily hurt a dog when a correction is given because of the amount of force directed on one small spot on the neck. That is why Leerburg will not sell them.
I use them on my GSDs. They keep the neck hair from waring thin. A regular flat collar will cause a thick coated dog's neck hair to thin. I also happen to like the look of them.
They are NOT for corrections. Although they are made on the same principle as a regualr choke collar they do not slide the same way. The lincs don't slip thru as easily as the chain/cord slides on a slip/choke collar.
You also have to put them on correctly or the lincs will 'catch' & not slide & lock & choke the dog's neck. Not to be confused with a slip/choke collar.
I use a prong for corrections. I do not remove the firsaver collar. Since it is placed high on the neck it does not interfear with the fursaver collar.
My fursaver collars are always on my dogs, as all their 'tags' are on them.
I don't know everything about fursavers, so I am curious about what other trainers will say. I do know why Ed won't sell chokes.
They are actually two very different collars. The choker puts all of the pressure on one point, and it "pinches" the dog where the the chain passes through the slipring. The fursaver generally will not tighten past the nearest link to the ring.
The best collar of this type is the prong (sometimes called pinch). It distributes the pressure evenly around the neck, and really doesn't "pinch" the dog like the choker does.
The popularity of the fursaver is due mainly to two factors; it is the only choke collar allowed in some European countries, and it is the only choke collar allowed in schutzhund trials (can't speak for the other protection sports).
Sorry, Anne. Guess we were typing at the same time.
