I just sort of had the light bulb flicker in my head on this a little bit. I got home from work, my wife had left to take the kids to their martial arts class about 1/2 hour before I got home, so I let Marco out to use the bathroom and a little play time before I take a shower. As I've been trying to redirect him from chewing on objects he's not allowed to chew on to bones and toys I've been saying UH UH! Well, I threw a toy for him to chase and as he started after it he decided to go straight for the couch, which he does alot. I did the UH UH and before I could redirect him, he redirected himself to the toy. I was so happy I instinctively said YES! He immediately spun around into a sit and stared at me like "you said that word, where's my bacon?" I guess I've been getting more of his attention than I realized.

FANTASTIC!
For me, I don't give empty markers .... because the marker means "reward coming" ..... you'll want to have the reward nearby when you give that marker!
Yeah, I meant to add that part. I was thinking, "I shouldn't have said that, because I don't have the treat" but at least I know it's starting to work.
The dog needs to learn that a marker WILL result in a reward even if you have to go into another room to get it. The mark itself becomes a reward (Pavlov's bell) but a bit of time between the mark and reward isn't a disaster as long is it WILL come!

I remember when I made that mistake at first, while new to marker training, period, and while still in marker-loading phase with a dog; someone (probably you, Bob) said "then just go get it."

when we first started marker training I made sure to always have little stashes of treats in every room of the house..lol.
Now im not suggesting you leave little piles of bacon in every room (ewww!) but try to have some sort of small treat with you at all times just for such an occasion.
i also kept stuff in my pockets, not always pleasant when you forget to check them before them in the wash.
