I always thought the squirrels around here were so cute - now I want to kill them (not sure if I really that or not, but I'm not happy with them!) I planted a whole bunch of gorgeous flowers in my backyard and they are eating the petals of half of them!!
I've never seen this happen before now. We live in the city and have been seeing more and more squirrel over the last few years. Kasey isn't outside enough to keep them away, and I think it happens in the early morning - my husband witnessed it at 5:30 the other morning or I wouldn't have believed it.
Anyone have anything that actually will work in keeping them away? I thought about getting an outdoor cat, but that's probably mean!
Squirrels are cute with nasty temperaments; most can kick a cat's butt. A GSD works much better.
I laughed at my Mom and her neighbors when I moved home from the country. Where I'd been living, squirrels are pests and they get exterminated. My Mom and four neighbors were sharing one squirrel, putting up feeders to compete for his attention.
Seriously, though...AC has humane traps that they will set.
Squirrels hate capsaicin, the substance that makes peppers hot. There are a lot of home made squirrel deterrent recipes on the web. The include hot peppers or hot sauce and a mixture of other stuff. A quick google will get you started. There are also commercial products available that usually contain capsaicin, garlic, and dried blood.
It's more apt to be rabbits that are eating the flowers.
Squirrels will dig up and eat crocus bulbs and nit the tips off of a few trees but I've never seen them nibble on flowers.
Slugs and snails could also be another critter that eats flowers and plants.

I didn't believe it was squirrels either Bob, until I saw it with my own eyes! I planted 4 different kinds of flowers, and then planted Iceland Poppies right behind them, and the next morning we look out the window and there's a squirrel sitting there having the poppies for breakfast. They don't eat the other flowers, just those - and get this, they leave the white ones and only eat the colored ones! So there are a bunch of stems sticking straight up with nothing on the ends!
We don't have rabbits where we live, so it can't be that.
I will try the pepper spray idea. I have heard of people using that with mixed results. I would love a GSD, but we don't have the room for another big dog!
Shake some dried cayenne pepper on the flowers and watch the fun. May have to reapply if it rains.Try used cat litter around the plants. They will think a cat has been there.
