Hi all, can I ask for your advice. My spaniel has very bad hips which were diagnosed at only three years of age, the VET said they are the worst hips he has ever seen after x ray. She is five now and so far there are no serious sypmtoms, she carries her hind leg the odd time but other than that is still fine movement wise.
She is not on Rimadyl etc. yet, we have her on joint supplements, I have switched brand names a few times as I find better ones but generally they all contain glucosamine hcl, chondrotin, omega 3, msm etc..
But then I came accross Natural Stride for Dogs and Advance Cetyl M that both contain an ingredient I had never heard about or tried before i.e.Cetyl Myristoleate along with the usual glucosamine etc..
Can I ask for anyones experience with using Cetyl Myristoleate and the above brand names for joint treatment and is it as impressive as I am lead to believe? Thanks
Hello, you peaked my curiosity with this question and what I could find was basically anecdotal reports, nothing other than one mice study. The mice where injected with an arthritis virus and then given the cetyl m. reports are none of the subject mice developed arthritis, but as there are different forms of arthritis the question is would it work for osteo (wear and tear) arthritis because the injection in the mice probably caused an inflammatory type of arthritis. You could probably try it, and if it doesn't work thats it. I know other joint supps that do work, Synovi G3 was fantastic for my aged dog, cosequin in studies showed improvement in horses in 3 days, and my favorite for mild arthritis is yucca-doesn't cure the arthritis but definitely helps with pain and increases mobility. I don't personally know of anyone in horses yet who's using this and we horse people tend to jump on good joint supps like flies on honey.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family.
I used to use CM with my X-country competition horse. It was VERY effective...actually within -48 hours there was great improvement. As time went on...a number of years...it's still helped but was not quite as fast or miraculous as it had been in the first couple of years. Not exactly sure why. It was a powder that cam in a canister & I would give it for maybe a month or so for the results. It was a number of years ago, so I am not totally sure of the amount of time it was give for the effective result. It was given by my holistic chiro/acupuncture vet.
I recently asked my holistic chiro/acupuncture vet (not the same one, although she does horses also) about using it for my dog when she presented with arthritis in her knee & she said the it was not as effective with the dogs as the horses in her experience.
