My dog is 9 months old now & is starting to not come back when I call him & when he does come back its slow. He also now has started to venture out further if off leash. Before he would run full keel as soon as he realized he could not see me anymore. I know he is still a pup but he was excellent at the recall before! Since I got him I used to hide on him when he was off leash, so he was always (until now) concerned to say the least about loosing me or getting lost. cause of this he would always stay within eye site of me.
Anyway, should I consider a e-collar, or is he still very young to use one on him.
For the time being, until I get some suggestions from you all, I will just start over again with him like he was a puppy. I.e.: treats, praise, play rewards whenever he recalls properly. Also, this is a age thing im assuming, he’s getting more independent?
Thanks,
Nick

I, personally, would not let him run loose until he has the recall down pat on both a short and long leash. Then, and ONLY then would I start giving him more freedom.
You are right that he is at the age where he's becoming his own man, so to speak. You need to work consistently with him on all his commands, and especially the recall command.

Have you laid a foundation for later work with puppy training? If so then take a look at my website for details as to how to use the Ecollar to teach a recall, and more!
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.
Im as consistent but sometimes during unforseen distractions he is reluctant. I make sure no distractions are around when off leash. i think i might be expecting to much from a 9month old?
Also he is doing a lot better latelywith the recall.
Lou, re: foundation training, do you mean specificly for the ecollr or in general. if in general, yes but not anything specifice for the ecollar. P.S. i have already checked your very informative site out, i actually have it in my favorit list.
thanks so much.
