I am trying to teach cody to come and lay down between my feet when I say "place".
Of course we are just in the beginning stages and I haven't given it a name yet. But I was wondering how any of you have taught your dog that behavior. I am not talking about going to his mat, but to come quickly around my right or left leg and lay down between my feet. Love to hear how you have taught it.
sharon
yes. lure him into the behavior just like with any other position. i just start him around my right leg (same as when i was starting to train the heel) and then when he's back there i usually reach down with my other hand to take the treat and "pull" it through beneath my legs to make him chase it through. as soon as he's there, mark + reward. once he's doing that consistently, add the down every time til he starts doing it on his own.
this is one of my favorite tricks, and is my wife's favorite to show off to her friends when they are over. everyone gets a kick out of it.
i was over at a friend's house recently. he has a whippet. i taught the dog this trick in about 5 minutes. sure enough he said every time he gets home now the dog runs between his legs and looks up at him waiting for a treat. really fun easy trick.
thanks everyone. That is exactly how I am teaching cody. So, I look forward to him learning this behavior and he loves to do things quickly and anything that gets him to move he loves, so I think the finished product will be something Cody really enjoys!
Thanks again.
