Folks often post that they are curious about the size their pup will be.
My English Shepherd pup is 17 wks. He weighs 40 lbs and has huge, splayed out shepherd feet. 21" at the withers.
The dam weighed 65 lbs and is thin. The sire is dead, breeding was from frozen semen. I am told the sire was "big" but no one said "huge".
I think these dogs are sort of "mutts", it's a pretty open gene pool.
Given this info, how big do you guys think he'll be?
Based on the size he is now, I'd guess that he'll be somewhere around the 70# range as an adult.
But yup, they're kind of purebred mutts as the main breeding focus is working ability. I've heard of Border Collie litters (form average 35-45# parents) with huge size differentials between the dogs when grown - the smallest was just under 30# and the largest was about 50#. Doesn't happen all the time, but it happens.
From my collies that weighed around the same at that age I'd say somewhere around 75 lbs give or take 5 lbs.
And English Shepherds are purebreds because English Shepherd is bred to English Shepherd and not Shepherd to Border Collie for example (at least as far as I'm aware). They are definitely bred for working ability and not looks but that has nothing to do with being purebred or not. Breeding for looks is what has wrecked far too many purebreds.
