My dog recently had a bad ear infection in which during that time she would shake her head and rub it on the floor. With that it caused her to get a hemotoma in her ear. We took her to the vet and got the ear all clear, but now her ear does not stand up like it use too. She now has one ear standing straight up and the other one flopping around. If I tape her ear up would it help with that ear and get it to stand back up, or is there anything else I can do?
They did drain the ear and it was on my 6 year old german sheppard. This happend back in the spring time when she had it and now her ear looks perfectly healthy except for not standing up like it use too.
Well, it's probably not going to stand up any more. I'm sorry to have to tell you that.
Once the cartilage in a dog with a heavy ear like a shepherd becomes creased badly, folded, it usually can't un-crease. Especially if it is a mid-ear crease. If it is just the tip (the ear is folded just at the end, like a collie) then it might straighten out.
You could try to tape it if your dog doesn't mind the tape -- just cone the ear with some easy to remove tape, like paper tape, and see if it will even stand with the tape on. If it still wants to fold, I guess I'd forget it.
Don't get the dog bothering the ear again though, as you sure don't want another hematoma.
If you really hate how your dog looks now a vet could help you to fix it by doing surgery . Some police dogs might loose their job if they lost their serious up-eared look.
For a pet, I guess I'd try to see this as a look special to your dog, that adds character.
There are several police canine GSDs in our area with floppy ears. It doesn't seem to influence the LE community (here, at least) near as much as the dog's ability and work ethic.
The cartilage is in the middle of the ear so it probably won't stand up again, but I just wanted to make sure. I think I will just let it be, because It does give her character and everybody always ask why one sticks straight up and one flops over. thanks for everybodys help and inputs.
