You go out and meet the club without any preconceived ideas about how they train. If they're a succesful club, trialing and titling dogs, their using old, new, everything available.
It may not match exactly what you see online Christy, but if its something you don't agree with, no one will try and force you to follow anything. Keep an open mind and remember, its a club, not training classes you pay someone for. Clubs are listed by region here:
We made the mistake of buying a pup from the breeder along with a training package (before I knew any better) What a disaster! We left her at 6 mos old for 6 weeks. She was yanked and cranked all over the place. After that, I did my research and began marker training. She responds so much better to this method. I still correct, but only for defiance. I was a little afraid of joining a club, and being made fun of for using marker training. You are right, I should be more open minded and just feel them out.
Through the link I was able to find a club near by, thanks again!
Christy: I too am with a club, but I let them know ahead of time that I do not use harsh corrections, I too believe in corrections but only after a dog knows what you are asking for and for when they are defiant. But I always make sure I check to see if I think they are defiant and perhaps they really do not understand the behavior I am asking. I am learning to trust my dogs and remember they are trying to tell me something. Not jump to conclusions.
I am the only handler in our schutzhund club that trains exclusively with markers. At first, our Training Director wasn't very supportive, but I stuck to my guns because my dog doesn't have enough prey drive to train with the techniques traditionally used in that sport. When I started chaining behaviors together and did a complete BH routine, he took notice, asking "You taught her all of that with FOOD?".
The other members were more supportive from the beginning because, as Steve, noone is shoving any particular method down your throat. They sometimes ask questions about how a particular behavior can be taught using markers.
Also, as Steve said, you will see many techniques, ranging from old-school to new-age, with some original stuff thrown in. The members of our club share them with others and are constantly asking about stuff they had heard of or hadn't seen before. If you go with an open mind, you will learn alot, and you will see new things that you do and do not wish to try.
