And many thanks again for the valuable opinions, CJ I will put a link up for pics, Elaine yes I live in a Suburb of Victoria and glad you like my home, it is beautiful for the most part.
I guess I should've added, but was trying to keep comment short, my background, I have been training dogs since the mid 80's, three GSD's and a Wolf Hybrid. So I am not new to training, just new to Dog Sport training. I've seen the evolution from Koehler's yank and crank to Pryor's hug your fur baby no matter what Luckily my first exposure was with a fairly good Yank & Crank (if there is such a thing) and I evolved from there. Perhaps that's what makes me skeptical of the attitude I saw when I went to see a club training day. That being said I am very open minded, and always looking for education and opinions or educated debate. What brought me to Leerburg, and inevitably Michael Ellis's system, which has worked brilliantly thus far
Maybe part of the problem also is the tone of the people I met, don't get me wrong they were all very nice and friendly, but to me it seemed they were doing Schutzhund for themselves, whereas I'm doing this for my dog's fulfillment, the looks I got when I said "well if she doesn't appear to enjoy it, then we'll try agility, or herding, or even Treiball, it was like I was a nut job. Oh well time will tell.
Thanks Again,
Regardless of which sport you choose, you are going to be dealing with a lot of people that are in it for self-fulfillment, and many of them are going to be biased to their sport of choice. Go to different clubs until you find one you like, but good luck on finding one where everyone's in it just for the dogs.
I sought a club so that I could familiarize myself with handling working dogs, as I needed to improve my dog's OB. My dog's fulfillment was secondary. I easily accomplished both of these goals without having to worry about which was more important, and we've had a lot of fun, to boot.
Very true Duane, sad but true. I just want a happy dog, and don't get me wrong I'll enjoy it as well, just don't need to prove how hard I can yank a lead, or brag about how my dogs so driven it needs an e collar lol. The guy made this statement 5 minutes after stating he doesn't bother going to the tracking field, he's just there for the fun bitework stuff lol. Your dog isn't motivated it's one dimensionally trained. Or the gal that hit her dog over the beek 4 times with a tug cause the dog knows better, I'm by no means a Furbaby Daddy, but if a dog fails a task 4 times in a row, are you really sure it knows better, or should you backtrain?
Again opinion, but the concensus seems that I can have a good Schutzhund trained pet, so I will proceed :-)
