I purchased the tape on building drive and focus with Bernard. It is informative and I have incorporated it into my training both obedience and protection " into my arms" . My bitch is not mouthing as much, however, we are still training. I beleive I am on my way to a motivational retrieve.

First off, I am new here.. so hello to everyone...
Vince,
I have a 2yr male Rottweiler..I have not taught formal retrieving yet (new to the world of working dogs) but have done some very beginning protection and OB work...
He mouths the heck out of a ball when doing a "play retrieve".... I don't out him, he "throws" the ball to me... could this also be stress/nerve related??
Mouthing a prey object is a result of two things. One is genetic and the other is poor training. No question that the single most important element to a full calm grip is genetics. My current Leerburg pup could not have a better grip at 10 weeks old. Now it is my job to teach him that most of the time you can play with your prey but every once in a while you must give it up to me. This way he is not thinking about giving it back as soon as he bites. To figure out just how often to out and the best way to calm your dog while he is biting pick up Ed’s tape with Mr. Flinks. I hope I answered your question. If not please give more background.
thanks for the response... I don't know if that answers my question (I will have to get ahold of the video first )..
I understand what you are saying about genetics and training... but I never "trained" a retrieve... just his natural instinct to chase a ball...
My point was a dog has a mouthy bite for two reasons. One is genetic the other is stress. When a dog is stressed he will mouth the prey item. The stress could be from expecting the OUT or too much pressure being applied. Amoung other reasons.
