I will be picking up my new Australian Shepherd puppy in a few weeks. He will be my constant companion as well as an agility competitor (I hope).
To that end I have been studying this site as well as various Leerburg/Ellis DVD's and plan to train him using Ellis's methods.
If the history of my last two pups is any guide, one of his favorite toys will be a "rope". I buy them in various diameters and lengths from the pet store. They seem to love to chew them and play tug with them. My Dobie went through 3-4 of these per week when he was teething.
My question concerns tugging with these ropes. Can I just play with him and let him keep the rope without ill effects and/or instilling "possessive behavior"?
My training director insists that if you want a dog to have drive for an object, you cannot let the dog keep it.
As Ian said, toys/tugs are picked when you and the dog are not engaging. Done properly, the toy will become a very high-value training reward.
