This is how Michael Ellis instructs it in the "Finishing Work" dvd, which is subtitled "Reducing the frequency of rewards and..."
You must remember that "variable reward schedule" is different from "random reward schedule", which would be the next step in the progression. Start by alternating the reward for every other sit, then every third. Once he is solid there, you would start with e random. second, third, first, third, second, etc.
Don't overthink it. Millions of dogs work on a random reward schedule, eventually for few rewards during a routine, and finally for a reward only after a complete discipline. There IS a way to do it, and it will work for you, too.
Bob, I have read other places where continuous reinforcement is compared to a coke machine. If you always put your money in and get a coke everything is great but when you put your money in and don't get a coke you feel cheated and are much less likely to put your money in again. And the variable reinforcement compared to a slot machine like you did. That made me question how to get him to understand his coke machine became a slot machine without him getting seriously discouraged when I skip a reward for what he viewed as paying for the reward, skip the delivery of a coke even though he paid.
I'm thinking that if you slip the dog enough coke now and then he wont even know when you miss occasionally. OH......wait..........Nevermind!
The coke machine is made to reward the 25cents (isn't that what a machine coke costs)every SINGLE time and NO effort to make it random. That doesn't mean there aren't a few that will still waste their money trying if they don't understand the concept of how the machine makes the reward happen.
With the slot machine the dog "understands" through random reward training that the effort WILL get the reward. That's what you've taught it. How much performance the dog gives will depend on how you convince it that reward WILL come.
