Ditto on liking the parents and the puppy picking aka Betty!
Excellent on the health checking and temperament!
If you do some testing yourself make sure you do it in a strange area for the pups and one at a time as in the video...but I 'm thinking you may know that already.
I have a soft dog and a very fiesty dog. I love them both. If you want to be challenged in training I would get the fiesty dog. Actually they are a blast. But just make sure you know what you want to do with your puppy, how you want to raise it up, and stick with it. My fiesty dog has a great heart. He puts himself into everything he does. He works for me because he loves to work. we do enjoy each other, but his desire is to work, be busy, do what it takes to get going and have an adventure! He tries hard to do a good job, but can get bored quickly.
My soft dog is a great dog too very smart, dying to please, loves people just doesn't like people trying to touch her. All she wants to do is please me. She will do whatever I ask and try her hardest. She remembers everything I ask her to do, her biggest problem is she will and guess what she thinks I want her to do. She doesn't alway guess right.
I think it is wonderful you have done so much research. One day I hope to be getting a puppy. I haven't decided what type to get yet. Right now all my dogs are terriers. They are a blast, but very active. by the time I get a puppy it will be my last dog so I want to be careful picking it.
Let us know how is goes, I am interested to see what type you picked and if you are satisfied in your choice. sharon and her pups Terra, Bindi, Cody
I'm not trying to answer this for Will at all Laine, but what Bob and I mentioned about who does the test applies to this. In some ways a puppies reaction to somethings out of fear can be similar enough to a confident reaction that it can be interpreted completely wrong when you use a structured test like this, if its interpreted by the wrong person.
Could be as simple as a breeder concentrating so much on breeding for color that in their eyes, the puppies temperament is great because they're so cute.
Could be someone who never does anything to really test their dogs temperament to know what they are seeing. Its all about who's doing the testing and even then, I don't see it as a guarantee, but with the right person, its helping you with the odds.
Also very dependent on how many different "types" of temperaments/personalities that the person has tested. Like working on a curve. All the pups the individual has tested will influence the level of test score of particular traits they see continually.
Test a varieties of different breeds/temperaments/bred for traits will bring those Golden tests down considerably.
Even testing a show line or pet litter of GSDs compared to a good Working line will giver the tester a completely different perspective on what's good and what's just ok.
Even testing scores in a litter of Goldens, "TO ME" would be just ok with this litter. Some are outright duds "TO ME". It doesn't mean they aren't good for someone, just not for me in what I would consider the proper reactions.
I think that tester would probable run out the door screaming and pulling out her hair if she tested a nice litter of working JRTs or Jagde terriers.
Thank you everyone for taking the time to answer! I made my choice for the calmer pup I actually have more questions which I will start inanother thread.
