I have to get Kasey's rabies vaccine sometime in the next couple weeks. Jean Dodds says to give the killed rabies vaccine. Do most vets and vaccine clinics use that? or is that something I need to give special attention to asking about?
"In the late 1970s – early 1980s, some kittens given rabies vaccines in California actually acquired the disease. That situation caused the USDA to rethink the wisdom of the modified live rabies vaccine....
Whatever the cause of the kittens developing rabies, it was decided modified live or infectious rabies vaccines were no longer advisable. At that point, we moved entirely to a non-infectious, killed, inactivated rabies vaccine."
And from AAHA:
"Modfied Live Virus (MLV) vaccines use an attenuated, inactive form of the virus. Since MLV acts and behaves like an actual virus, MLV often work better than killed vaccines as it stimulates Cell Mediated Immunity. However, since it is a truly live virus of a disease that we are trying to prevent, there is a small risk that the inactive virus can revert into the true form of the virus. For this reason, there is NO MLV Rabies vaccine made."
Are they again making MLV Rabies vaccines?? If so, that's scary as I have been assuming the Rabies vaccine my dogs get is a killed virus.

I've never personally encountered it, and your post makes much more sense.
That MSU.edu link I posted above does contain this line:
"A killed rabies vaccine in the most commonly given and the preferred route is intramuscular."
When I look in PubMed I find rabies MLV use and research only with regard to wildlife, though; e.g., "The currently available modified-live rabies virus vaccines have either safety problems or do not induce sufficient protective immunity in particular wildlife species. Therefore, there is a need for the development of new live rabies virus vaccines that are very safe and highly effective in particular wildlife species."
