Hi,we've started our female about 3 moths ago in schutzhund.WE are very happy with her tracking n obedience. The problem lies in her prtection. She bites deep full grips,n carries wonderfully. She is a picture when she carries shows no fear. The problem is she is not barking. We've tried lateral movement, frustration, every thing but really challenging her.she won't be a year for 3 weeks. She barks in here kennel, crate n when someone comes to the house.any ideas.......help
What worked for me was hiding behind something. She would be tied off to a tree, teased with her toy and then I would run and hide, jumping out every now and then to tease her. Eventually it worked. Now she always 'speaks'!

Is the helper cominhg too soon to give a bite? Try tying her out and have the helper approach in a zig zag and at first sign of her noticing him. When her ears perk, or start to growl or bark praise her.
Do this again with the same result, It won't take long for her to see by alerting on the man I can run him off. When/if she barks rally praiser and have the helper really move out and hide. Have him act a like he is scared when he runs and hides, as if she ran him away. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
After a couple of these she will be barking, unless there is another problem.

Jeff... at a PSD seminar we got to work with an outstanding dog who would not bark...period. He would stare at the decoy as he came into the dog during line excercises and be totaly silent. I was amazed at this dog because he would actully back away from the decoy to lure him into the parimiter of the circle where he could take a bite. Once it was realised what he was intentionally doing this, the decoy would not pass the parimiter and would not present him with a bite till he barked for it. It worked, give it a try and see if it works for you too.
If the dog barks good in the kennel you could start in the kennel OR have a chain link panel at the training field and start behind it. Allot of young dogs not started (bark for the bite) at a very young age make up their own behaviors that are comfortable to them. My dog would not get a bite (reward) until it starts the behavior desired from here on out. Is the helper holding the sack or is it on a stick and string (prey on the ground moving)?? Sometimes going BACK to puppy imprinting that was missed is the best thing.
Jeff
A lot of dogs wont bark if the decoy is to close. If he is have him (the decoy) start the aggitation out about 50 or 60 feet and work in from that.
And let her spend a lot of time watching the more advanced dogs work.
Good luck
Ron
