Well no, we're not. I'm saying don't use a target at all. None, don't do it you'll create more problems than you fix IMO.
You'll have to phase the target out, you'll have issues with that, thats when dogs start to cast, once they do that you have to deal with it. . .
Don't use a target, teach the dog that reward placement is at the furthest point out that you indicate. There will always be a far point in a trial, it will always be away from where the dog would down, you never have to deal with those issues, and the dog stays very fast because he has a long way to go.
This thread is the reason I joined this board-and the reason why I reread posts:
Excellent training advice from multiple sources resulting in success for my dog.
Robert,
I tried this last night and today with my dog and it works GREAT! No more worring about how the dog approaches the prey item, and I don't have to worry about her behaviour at the end of the send out, I can encourage her, even, which makes her more pumped up for the next send out. After 3 times she was smoking across the yard! And she followed my directional, even when I placed the prey item at another part of the fence! Really, thanks!
BTW, is the command 'voran' or 'vorous'? You would think I would know this BEFORE I teach the exercise...
Relation is reciprocity. How we are educated by children, by animals!-Martin Buber
Quote: What's really cool is to place them prior to training in different locations, and then going out and doing send outs to different boundries where you put a ball and the dog learns that, "holy crap. . .anywhere he points there is a ball!!".
VC by target I meant the reward for the dog. Ball, tug, bumper, whatever. I guess I used the wrong terminology. I guess what I want to clarify with you is are you saying over time to not use a reward? Wouldn't this kill the motivation to have the dog run out everytime for nothing?
Melissa,
By the way, "Voran" is a command used in bite work.....
No need for you to make OB more exciting than it already is!
