"Can I get some examples on how to add motion and activity to my sessions. I do move around the room after she completes each command but I don't know how upbeat I should be and how much I am supposed to be moving around. "
How upbeat the level of excitement is will depend on the reactions you get from the pup. Unless it's as really shy or spooky pup more then likely it will join in with your antics. Then the FUN training can begin.
i'd like to know exactly how you are getting the dog into a " down " .
are you luring her into position from the front , side , with or without food ?
how quickly does she get into the down ?
are you being as consistent with all aspects of your behaviour , in all locations , as you can be ?
putting the dog into a down is putting the dog into a submissive , vulnerable position which obviously is asking a lot . asking her to hold that position is one thing , but adding distractions of any kind is pushing things even further as you are asking the dog to hold a position she may not be comfortable in .
you need to generalize that behaviour everywhere else before you can add duration , let alone distraction . so when you can get her to down , even for a second , in any and all locations , then you can start adding duration back at the scene of the first downs .
as for your behaviour you need to be as animated as is required to get and hold the dogs' interest .
The surface can be an issue with "down". Wet grass, hot pavement, little stones on a concrete driveway or sidewalk can put my dog off "down".
It occurred to me that might be an issue with a pup.
