Hello Everyone,
I have a soon to be five month GSD puppy. I have been feeding her a mixture of orijin and evo herring formula for the last two months 3 cups a day. Her weight and body shape has been monitored closely and compared to a GSD puppy growth chart. I am a bit concerned due to the fact she is reaching her weight goal for each month a bit early; she is 45 pounds as to were she's supposed to be 44 pounds the coming week. She turns 5 month on the 18th... I have no doubt that she will reach 50 pounds within the next three weeks. Her body shape seems to be fine I can still feel her ribs without any excess fat. A bit of background, her father weighed in at 110 while her mother weighed 80 pounds. Is this cause for concern?
Your dog will most likely be around 80-90 pounds full grown. Allow her to weigh appropriately as she grows. I also agree that keeping a pup lean up to 18-24 months is good for them. Once they hit 18 months they should start growing out (getting a bit wider as they gain muscle and definition). Gaining a pound or two during the 'wider phase' is normal.
I come by adult weight numbers by taking the weight at 4 months and multiplying by 2. If she was around 40 pounds at 4 months old, then she will be around 80-90 pounds full grown. My dog is 13 months and weighs 55 pounds. At four months she was 22. She's right on target for her adult weight.
