The puppy had his first set of shots on Tues and he goes in for neutering next Tues. he will only be 3 months old and the vet is against it but when faced with rescue home or no home, he said he would neuter in that case. I hate it, but unless we keep him I can't see another alternative.
I am so tired of people saying to me, he's do cute, why can't you keep him? I could slap them. If its that easy, then why don't they take him? Dog ownership to me is not roaming the neighborhood and no training. It's not that easy.
On the bright side, he is interacting with my rottie and they are doing so good. Puppy loves rottie, and rottie goes between aloof tolerance, and jubilant playing. It is so funny to watch him play and try so hard to not step on him, or be overwhelming. It makes my heart very happy.
It sounds to me like you are using your head, not your heart, and that is the right and sensible thing to do, the other way round can lead to a bucket load of heart ache and trouble - it is so easy to feel heart sad for a dog or pup in need of a home, it is a human instinct, but a knee jerk reaction, and you are clearly being very pragmatic about this pup's future.
What you ARE doing, is right, caring and completely logical about what he needs, and I have the utmost respect for you in doing this.
Whoever gets this boy, will reap the benefits of the work and thought you have invested in a stray that was heading for certain death.
It does seem to be true that early neutering can contribute to some orthopedic problems. But on the "up-side", average families want low energy couch potato easy going pets, and early neutering contributes to that as well.
Dogs tend to not make it in their new homes because they aren't housebroken, they are too full of beans and "needs", or they bite. So if you can house break him, give him basic training, he's going to find a great home.
It's the best start you can give the little guy. Good for you to undertake this project!
It helps that my husband and I have talked about it more and are in agreement over what is the best future for him. I truly appreciate all the support here.
Tubal ligation and vasectomy are a legal alternative to neutering and spaying in CA. This might be the case in other states as well.
In some countries these procedures are used instead of the more invasive spay/neuter.
It is difficult to find a vet that would perform tube ligation and vasectomy instead spay/neuter. Just like with overvaccination owners' awareness of the alternatives and increased demand for less invasive procedures would help to change the common practice.
