Although I don't use e-collars for training I'm not a fan of using the vibrate mode for warning the dog. If the dog is on it's own and doesn't get the "warning" what's to keep it from keeping on going.
Same with the electric wire and boundary collars. If the dog doesn't get a warning what stops it from going forward if the power is off?
IMHO I would just zap the dog to let it know that right here is where your going to get zapped.
Again, I'm not a e-collar trainer.
I've never done it, I depend on fences, but maybe you could teach him a barrier type behavior, something he's not to cross. Two posts at the sides of the driveway or something.
I taught invisible boundaries for Sadie's home territory using markers (specifically, IBs) instead of an electric invisible fence.
I have an invisible fence that I have train first with out the collar then added the collar.
My collars are set with out the tone or vibrate warning and the zap is mid high so there is no second guessing but I still won't trust that to keep Harley to get to me if he can hear or see me after some point. Dexter is just more happy to sleep on the deck.
My collar also have a safety light so when battery run low I know and get a new battery right a way.
All dogs are different and our situation are different too. Harley is with me most of the time and he wants to be right next to me all the time. He won't break a "stay" on the other hand
Thank you Betty, that is the one and only time I used an e-collar, Ii didn't know about marker training then and had tried various ways without success, that training stuck, he never challenged it, and I could boundary mark him anywhere just by saying brrr. Amber on the other hand would challenge at every step.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family.
