I have been in a situation where i had to choose which bills to pay and give away a dog, hamsters, and tropical fish. None went to a shelter.
My son was heart-broken, but I had no better choice. I explained everything to him and assured him that I had chosen excellent homes for our pets. The most important thing I did was reassure him that I would fix our finances and we would have pets again.
I grew up poor. I am sick and tired of seeing people who have the means treat animals, objects, and other people as disposable. People need to be more responsible about their choices, be clear in their thinking and reasoning, and quit excusing their poor choices.

ETA; FWIW, IMO, IMHO, JMO, I see alot more good going into shelters than coming out. JMO.

My family was also quite poor for several years while I was growing up. My parents made it a priority to keep our dog even though she just had ol roy and the most basic of vet care. It's not the decision of keeping or rehoming your pet, it the decision to make the best choice in your situation and considering the the needs of your pet.
You taught your son responsibility in finding new homes for your animals. My folks taught us responsibility in keeping making the dog a priority once we had taken her in off the street. One choice was not better than the other since the bottom line is that In both cases the animals were able to lead good lives with people who loved and cared for them.

Thank you so much for saying this, Mara. That is the thing that stings me the most. In both cases, a good choice was made. In neither case was a pet left at a shelter overnight, under the cloak of anonymity. The biggest point that I was trying to make is that, if we are truly considerate, We CAN make better choices, and the lives of all creatures will be enriched.
