Here's a great article, IMHO. Definitely worth the read. It's concerning Purely Positive training methods when applied to aggressive dogs, and the presence of fanatical trainers that will euthanize a dog before giving it a correction.
I'll bet a lot of these people have never raised a child or have very rotten, spoiled children.
I'm a huge believer in in motivational/marker training but I've also learned that few people can do it correctly beyond basic sit, down, stay type behavior.
I don't think Purely Positive has much to do with earning a dog's respect. I've seen "trained" competition dogs in AKC OB and Schutzhund that had little to do with basic, don't chase the cat, stay off the counter, Don't leave the yard or even come when called outside a formal OB routine.
Training without understanding means nothing.
Pertinent. Too bad it won't keep viral b.s. like that picture from an embedded prong collar from circulating as 'reasons training collars are inhumane'. (spent too much time arguing that flat collars embed too, and a stupid owner leaves their dog on a slip lead of any kind.)
The craziest part is that the pure positive trainers genuinely feel that they have "exhausted all options" before putting a dog to sleep. They don't consider an aversive an option even to save the dogs life.
The CULT of pure positive is really the only way to describe them.
Note that most "clicker trainers" aren't that extreme. They have enough sense to refer a dog that's over their heads.
I'm seeing a backlash against the fanatics. Even the CCPDT and APDT have become less fanatical, at least openly. When I first looked at the certification a few years ago it was readily apparent that it was just an attempt to make pure positive trainers look more "official" and somebody who hadn't drunk the kool-aid would not pass. I see more moderation in their approach now although they still don't like e-collars.
